Halloween is just around the corner, and to experience the holiday in its entirety, we need a couple of things like a great costume, lots of candy, and of course, scary movies. We covered this topic back in 2020 but we’re back with an update for you! One thing to keep in mind here is that not all scary movies are for all people. It is why here we’re covering the best Halloween movies of 2021, sprinkling in some classics, horrors, and family favorites to keep up with the Halloween spirit.

Halloween Movies (Broken Down By Type) To Watch This Year

There is no rule that you can’t watch a Halloween-themed movie all year round, but let’s face it, there is something festive about watching scary movies on the scariest day of the year. But not all movies are created equal, and there are different genres suitable for people with different tastes.

Classic Halloween Movies

Yes, these are considered the Halloween movie classics that many of us have seen at one point or another. They’re a holiday staple and choosing one or two to watch is a must.

Scream (1996)

A Halloween classic, Scream is the epitome of a black comedy/slasher movie starring a long list of Hollywood A-listers. It will continue to top the Halloween-themed movie charts for ages.

Hocus Pocus (1993)

After three centuries, a trio of witches gets resurrected to wreak havoc in this classic horror-comedy movie starring Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)

A very familiar cult movie about a couple forced to ask help from a wacky scientist after their car breaks down, this is a must-see for all horror movie enthusiasts.

The Addams Family (1991)

A group of con artists tries to con the most eccentric family, the famous Addams family. There are so many versions of this ageless movie, but here we’ll stick to the classic 1991 version starring Anjelica Huston, Cristopher Lloyd, Raul Julia, and more famous names.

Beetlejuice (1988)

A comedy-horror movie, Beetlejuice has all the elements to be the great Halloween movie night choice. Plus, it’s got Winona Ryder, Geena Davis, Michael Keaton, and Alec Baldwin.

Tales of Halloween (2015)

An anthology-type movie with ten stories about monsters and ghosts where each story revolves around October 31, this is a must-see during Halloween.

Horror Movies

There are the flicks that are so scary we continue to talk about them year after year. If you’re easily scared, then these will scare the heck out of you! You’ve been warned. 

The Shining (1980)

There is rarely a person that has not seen the Shining. This movie has everything a horror requires: creepy children, an isolated hotel, a terrified wife, and of course, a downright scary main character played by Jack Nicolson. 

Halloween (1978)

The original Halloween movie and the first installment of the Halloween franchise, this flick brought us Michael Myers and inspired numerous spin-offs, remakes, and sequels.

Friday the 13th (1980)

Come on, who has not seen the scary hockey mask movie and heard about Jason Voorhees and his Friday the 13th showing. 

A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

The classic slasher movie brought us Freddy Krueger, another famous character, this one stalking teenagers in their dreams.

Poltergeist (1982)

A creepy story about a family whose house gets possessed by ghosts that come out of their TV, Poltergeist is another great Halloween-themed movie.

Carrie (1976)

Based on the iconic Stephen King novel of the same name, a teenage movie gone wrong, Carrie is a well-known movie and one of the must-sees during Halloween.

The Exorcist (1973)

A creepy child possessed by the devil, scary sounds, sticking to the ceiling, projectile vomiting, and much more, this is what The Exorcist brought to the scene, and it is one of the most famous movies ever.

Night Of the Living Dead (1968)

The original zombie movie shot in black and white, The Night Of the Living Dead, set the bar for the myriad of scary zombie movies that follow.

Psycho (1960)

This is a true classic gem and a movie that made people scared of their showers for days after watching it. Psycho is now a fan favorite and a topic for many spin-offs, remakes, and origin story movies.

Paranormal Movies

These movies are for those that like those unexplainable situations and paranormal activity. While they’re not for everyone, many people love them. You’ll even find a classic at the end that’s made the list for many years. 

Paranormal Activity (2007)

Many of us have been scared to move into a new house after watching Paranormal Activity. In this 2007 movie, Katie and Micah experience something not easily explained when they move into a new home.

The Conjuring (2013)

A new house with a supernatural presence brings two paranormal investigators to check things in this nightmare-inspiring paranormal-themed movie.

The Blair Witch Project (1999)

A movie created from archive footage recorded by three film students looking to discover the secret of a local murderer named Blair Witch is a scary yet must-see movie during Halloween.

The Babadook (2014)

Another tremendous paranormal activity movie, The Babadook, tells the story of a child who fears monsters, and his mom discovered that there is something more real to her son’s fears.

The Sixth Sense (1999)

A movie that starts innocently soon enough turns dark, with the main character Cole having supernatural abilities. “I see dead people” is a phrase that sends chills down my spine.

Family Halloween Movies

These are the Halloween movies that the entire family can enjoy together. You may find a couple that might scare the youngsters, but they are just too good to omit. 

Casper (1995)

It is a classic child love story where Casper the ghost falls in love with Christina Ricci’s character, and his ghost family does everything to break them apart.

It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (1966)

A family classic, this is a movie telling the story of waiting for the arrival of the Great Pumpkin while the Peanuts gang teases Linus.

Ghostbusters (1984)

A classic movie about a group of ghost-busting heroes that bring a comedic twist on paranormal activity. Hey, it also has Sigourney Weaver who turns into the hounds of hell. What’s not to love?

Labyrinth (1986)

David Bowie plays the Goblin King, George Lucas produces it, and Jennifer Connely stars as the main character in this family movie about a girl who needs to save her brother from becoming a goblin.

The Haunted Mansion (2003)

A movie based on a titular Disney theme park ride, The Haunted Mansion stars Eddie Murphy, Marsha Thomason, Nataniel Parker, Wallace Shawn, and more. It tells the story of a family that visits a haunted mansion.

Corpse Bride (2005)

A Tim Burton classic, Corpse Bride is a cartoon/horror/romance wrapped into one great Halloween-themed movie package. Plus, we get the voices of Helena Bonham Carter and Johnny Depp.

Hotel Transylvania (2012)

Hotel Transylvania, a cartoon about a lavish resort for monsters, will amaze and entertain the whole family. Plus, you can make it a marathon, as there are now four parts in this franchise.

Fresh(er) Halloween Movie Releases

While Halloween movies aren’t released all that frequently, there have been some that have emerged over the last few years that are definitely worth checking out. Here are a few that made the list. 

The Nun (2018)

A nun takes her own life, and the Vatican investigates the causes, discovering a horrifying secret in this relatively fresh horror movie.

It: Chapter 2 (2019)

Pennywise, the clown, makes a comeback after 27 years and terrifies the masses in this sequel of the famous It horror movie from 1990.

Hubie Halloween (2020)

Adam Sandler and Kevin James will keep you entertained for a couple of hours with their attempt to save Halloween.

Candyman (2021)

A sequel to the 1992 classic, this movie explores the history of the Candyman, and it will change your view of mirrors.

Last Night in Soho (2021)

This is a movie about an aspiring fashion designer who can transport back to the 1960s. Last Night in Soho holds a dark twist. You’ll have to watch it to find out.

Halloween Kills (2021)

Michael Myers is back this Halloween with the next chapter, Halloween Kills. This scary flick stars all the well-known names from past Halloween movies: Jamie Lee Curtis, Judy Greer, and Andi Matichak.
